Olibanum

Olibanum or Frankincense (Boswella Papyrifera) is one of the great treasures of the ancient world, Frankincense is the very essence of luxury and has been prized for centuries for its heavenly scent and medical and spiritual properties. It’s a natural gum that consists of a resinous dried sap that is sourced from Boswellia tree.

 These main trees are genus used for their sweet-smelling gum which, when dried, pounded and burned makes incense. It’s a type of rubber or resin that comes out through many fractured trees in hot temperate regions.

 Olibanum is known Locally in Sudan as “Luban”. It is the dry exudate obtained from the stems and branches of Boswella tree that grows in the region of South Kordofan, Darfur and Blue Nile states.

Production of Olibanum starts in mid-December to beginning of January while tapping the trees to allow the exudate to bleed out and gets hard is performedearlier between September and October.

Sudan exported more than 7,000 metric tons of Olibanum in 2019 to different countries including China, India, Vietnam, Lebanon, UAE, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, KSA, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Mexico and Turkey.

Olibanum Types

Types: Olibamum is greenish-yellow solid irregular nodules, varies in size and graded as below:

Nagawa

particles size > 10mm

Grade 1

particles size 10-5mm

Grade 2

particles size 5-2.5 mm

Grade 3

particles size < 2.5 mm

Grade 4

particles —stock to tree barks in different sizes

Uses

  • perfumery and aromatherapy.
  • ingredient that is used in skincare.
  • The Egyptians cleansed body cavities in the mummification process with frankincense and natron.
  • In Persian medicine, it is used for diabetes.

Uses

  • Recent studies have found a positive influence of Olibanum on Rheumatism.
  • In classical Indian medicine, Gum Olibanum is used as an anti-inflammatory remedy and as a wound healer in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) it (ruxiang) along with myrrh (moyao) have anti-bacterial properties as well as blood-moving uses It can be used topically or orally.
